Deadly Crash in Southwest Bakersfield

On Friday night, November 11, there was a deadly crash in southwest Bakersfield following a police pursuit.

According to police, officers tried to stop 18 year old Nigel Eddie Nieto but he did not yield and he took off westbound on Ming Avenue where he then ran a red light and hit another car going southbound. In total four cars were involved in the collision.

When police investigated, they found him to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs and he was taken to hospital due to his injuries and subsequently booked into the Kern County jail.

His passenger in the vehicle was 18 year old Alexander Barajas and he was declared dead at the scene.

Nieto is now facing charges of failing to yield causing death, DUI causing injury while under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs, suspended license and murder.

Some of the drivers and passengers of the other vehicles received minor injuries.

Greyhound Bus Accident Near Fresno

On Wednesday, October 19 a Greyhound bus ran off the highway in Central California causing several injuries.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened when the Greyhound bus was traveling on a regular route from Fresno to Bakersfield. It occurred about 30 miles from Fresno in the small town of Travers, when the bus was traveling southbound on State Route 99.

It appears that the bus ran off the right shoulder and hit a fence. There were 28 passengers on board and 15 of them, including the driver suffered minor injuries. Those who complained of pain were taken to local hospitals as a precaution, but luckily no one suffered from serious injuries.

Officials are investigating but at this time the reason for the accident is not yet known.

Bakersfield Man Under Arrest for Felony DUI

A Bakersfield man is under arrest for felony DUI after a crash in Santa Maria that killed two children.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Monday September 5, when 36 year old Jerald Holman driving a red Toyota Camry at speed, swerved into oncoming southbound traffic on Highway 166 and hit a Chevrolet head on. The Toyota went air bound and his two step children aged 7 and 4 were ejected and were pronounced dead at the scene. Holman and his passenger, 26 year old Todeshia Lewis of Bakersfield had minor injuries.

On his release from hospital he was arrested and charged with eight felonies including Second Degree Murder and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated.

If convicted, Holman faces life in state prison.

In the second vehicle, 30 year old Aaron Pyne and 31 year old Katherine Pyne, both of Yucaipa had minor and moderate injuries and two children in the vehicle, a 7 year old girl and a 9 year old boy both had fractured ankles,

Two People Die in Accidents in Central San Joaquin Valley

On Monday, August 22, two people died on central San Joaquin Valley highways.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the first accident happened Just before midnight, when 30 year old Rodolfo Perez was driving south into Mendota on Highway 33. He then drifted into the northbound lane in his 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and was hit by a tomato hauler being driven by 50 year old Gerardo G. Barajas, 50, of Coalinga.

Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

On the same day, 35 year old Hugo Contreras of Bakersfield was driving south on Highway 99 in a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup just north of Delano at around 3.30 p.m. He then drifted onto the shoulder, rolled, hit an electrical box and caught fire. He was trapped in the wreckage and the pickup caught fire and he died.

Teenage Girl Dies in Accident on a River

In the middle of Saturday afternoon, July 9 a young teenage girl died after an accident on a river in central California.

According to Fresno County Sheriff’s office, the accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Kings River in Reedley near the Lindy’s Landing & Campground. Fourteen year old Cheiann Berry, of Torrance was being towed in an inner tube by a male family member. As the boat made a turn in an area southeast of the intersection of East Rose and East Floral avenues, she was thrown from the tube and hit a tree on the shore. She was taken to hospital where she died of her injuries.

The death was ruled an accident and the driver, also from Southern California, will not face any criminal charges and cooperated fully with investigators.
